Garment industry in Indonesia began to develop around the 1970's, while new export done around 1980. The development of this industry, especially after a number of industries that provide raw materials apparel has grown before. Among the spinning industry, industrial yarn, as well as industries that produce synthetic fiber as raw material for producing finished textiles.
Moments of export activities started around 1982, the export value of textile and garment and textile products has only reached about 160 million U.S. dollars. But within 15 years, or about 1998, the export value of Indonesia textiles and textile products has considerably increased to 8 billion U.S. dollars. Until now, the textile industry and textile products are still the mainstay of non-oil exports a considerable role.
Labor Intensive
Understanding garment as the end product of the merger and the sewing of various pieces and komponan into shapes so the form of clothing, play an important role in the textile industry and textile products. Garment industry also contributed in no small part in increasing the value of non-oil exports.
Garment industry is also labor-intensive industries are able to absorb the workforce in large numbers. From about 5130 medium-scale garment industry and the existing large in 1996, was able to absorb labor to reach 1.53 million people. For small-scale industry at that time there were 38,932 business units and employment of 381,901 people. As for the household is recorded at 357,020 units and employ as many as 457,403 people.
Export quality
Although the export value of garment and apparel products is quite large, but worth only about one third of the total existing production. While two thirds are still marketed for domestic consumption. This condition occurs mainly because the quality of Indonesian garment products are still unable to compete with products of other countries, and not able to meet the quality standards required by some countries importers.
Problem of quality control or quality control seems to be the greatest problem facing the garment industry. Problem of poor quality garments that often occurs, usually derived from the raw material fabric sheets that do contain or are disabled, as well as defects that occur during the process of making a garment. For the problem of raw fabric materials are related to the results of previous industry that should be level and a sense of mutual support garment.
Meanwhile, to address the low quality of the garment industry, the industry usually has stepped up efforts to strict quality control. Nevertheless, a number of export target countries, like Japan, it seems not an easy market to penetrate. Garment industry might still need more time to improve its quality.
